Three days of planning, sharing and reconnecting with Liberty EU partners in France provided valuable insights into – and excitement for – the fantastic programme still to come. Working across Europe has been a challenge of late – but especially for a programme that has transnational mobility for artist development and touring commissions embedded throughout, the last two years have been interesting to say the least. So it was incredibly rewarding to regroup and refocus in France this November. Hosted by CNC danse, the three days of meeting partners featured some surprising pop-up performances from host and choreographer Nathalie Cornille, fascinating seal spotting on the wide-open beaches of Berck-Sur-Mer and four seasons of weather in one day during a quick stop at the local chip van!
With Liberty EU coming into its third and final year in 2022, audiences can expect an amazing cultural programme all across Europe. The European partnership will create and share performances, events and artistic inspiration across the continent including huge carnivals and touring Jazz musicians in Denmark, dance festivals with site-specific pieces in Slovenia, interactive remote-controlled light installations in Italy, street-theatre performances, walking literary tours as well as digital art in shipping containers in Germany and dance performances from France, but this is not all!
In August 2022, the festival will then celebrate its finale in Leicester by delivering brand-new work commissioned by our European partners and created by young artists – a national premiere for many new pieces and in some cases even a world premiere – showcasing artistic talent to a highly mixed local population, global cultures at their best!
Even after the end of the Creative Europe funded programme in 2022, Liberty EU will leave a lasting legacy: An online artist portfolio featuring young artists from all across Europe under the age of 30 at the start of the programme. The portfolio gives these talented artists the possibility to widen their reach and start building an international audience and reputation through the network of partners within the Liberty EU programme. But furthermore, the portfolio enables audiences, organisations, festivals and venues to read about each artist, follow their social media presence, see examples of their work and contact them directly to discuss potential bookings or commissions. With the Liberty EU programme supporting three years of commissioning processes across the continent, lots of fantastic new performances, exhibitions and digital works have been developed and shared with audiences not only across Europe but all around the world.
At the core of this Creative Europe programme lies a multitude of connections – including artists connecting with commissioning bodies, partners connecting with new organisations, performers connecting with new audiences, audiences connecting with new work and people, and – at the heart of it all – people who want to connect and come together to share great work by incredible artists. These connections can springboard partnerships that will last decades – and very welcome so, as continuing to work in Europe from Brexit-Britain is certainly an aspiration for many of us.
The team of people behind the Liberty EU programme wants to lead, create and deliver some of the most cutting-edge work driven by young artist’s visions to be seen all over Europe. We hope that this passion, dedication and energy will be visible, almost tangible with the projects and performances delivered in this final year of celebrating Liberty EU across Europe in 2022!
We will keep you up to date with all #LibertyEU events and opportunities as the programme grows…
